Poppy Sculpture

Poppy Sculpture

Royal Wootton Bassett is being gifted a magnificent marble commemorative poppy designed by the well-known artist Mark Humphrey whose work “Everyman Remembered”, was exhibited in Trafalgar Square over the period of Armistice Day last year. Mark was born in the local area and wants his work to be on show in the town which has done so much to honour those killed who were serving our nation and repatriated through Royal Wootton Bassett. The sculpture, which is some 3 metres in diameter and weighs over 4 tonnes, is made from Carrara marble and is being installed on a site at the top of Marlow Way, opposite Kingsley Avenue.

However, such an imposing work of public art needs a substantial base on which to sit.   Residents will see considerable work going on to evacuate soil and debris from a large hole some 5 metres in diameter. This will be refilled with reinforced concrete and topped with a polished concrete cap. The contractor, Heritage Restoration Ltd, has undertaken to keep disruption and nuisance for residents to a minimum and will maintain their high standard of Health and Safety awareness throughout the term of the project.
